Kitchen garden program

If you are interested in helping with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program at Wombat Public School, there are lots of ways you can help.

Volunteering your time

In order for the program to run successfully, we rely on volunteers to help in the kitchen and the garden. There will always be a teacher with you and no experience cooking or gardening is required. If you are only available one or two days a term we are still happy for you to help - it does not need to be a weekly commitment.

If you decide you would like to help in the garden, you will be assisting students to harvest vegetables and herbs, weed garden beds, prepare the soil for new plants, planting seeds and seedlings and watering. Throughout the year other jobs in the garden may arise that you will have the opportunity to help with.

If you decide you would like to help in the kitchen, you will be given a small group of students, a recipe and all the ingredients and equipment to cook with. Recipes are fresh but basic and simple to follow.

Both Kitchen and Garden volunteers are welcome and encouraged to stay for lunch that the kitchen groups have prepared.

It is vital that our garden beds are watered regularly. If you could spare 10 minutes of a morning or afternoon to water this help would be invaluable.

Donations

Donations are always greatly appreciated.

In the kitchen, we are always looking for more food. Some suggested items to donate are

  • vegetables
  • dry foods - flour, breadcrumbs, spices, sugar

In the garden, we are always planting new seeds and seedlings. These would be greatly appreciated and will go to good use.
